21ST CENTURY LEARNING

Education in the 21st century must be more than rote memorization carried out by passive learners. Our students must be dynamically literate, critical thinkers, creative, collaborative, and communicative among many other skills.

Our schools must empower our students to holistically thrive in our complex society. Our students must understand society through a cultural, social, economic, political, and historic lens. The latter refers to a deep understanding of the systems of oppression that were put in place at the inception of civilization. These institutions continue to negatively impact marginalized students, teachers, families, and whole communities. In light of the current global pandemic, this has become so clear.

To ensure that our students' learning experiences are equitable, we not only have to promote the aforementioned skills, but we must also provide the tools to help them get there. Furthermore, if we want our students to holistically thrive, we have to be cognizant of their physical, social, and emotional well-being. This pandemic has been difficult for everyone, and our little resisters need to know we are there for them.
