LITERACY//WRITING

An important question that we should ask ourselves as we plan our curriculum is, how will I integrate inclusive writing instruction? First, inclusive writing instruction means we must empower our students to see themselves as writers. We do this by affirming their writing at every developmental stage and providing our students daily, authentic writing opportunities across the disciplines.

Affirming all our students' writing skills requires us to view drawing, scribbles, phonetic and inventive writing, labels, sentences, paragraphs, and so on as valuable forms of writing. Students should engage in low-stakes writing opportunities where they can experience and translate their learning into their own words. Lastly, writing should not be limited to reading and writing blocks. Writing should occur in math, science, social studies, extracurriculars like the arts, etc. Writing should happen everywhere!
